Climate Central is an independent group of scientists and science translators who research and report the facts about our changing climate and how it affects people’s lives. We use science and technology to generate thousands of local storylines and compelling visuals that make climate change relevant and show what can be done about it. About the role:
Climate Central is seeking a highly skilled climate scientist to join our team. Science is the foundation of all of Climate Central’s work. Reporting to the VP for Science, the climate scientist will be part of a new initiative on climate services. The scientist will develop new methods, insights, and data products that support climate-informed decision making in the U.S.

The ideal climate scientist will have an established track record of scientific research and a passion for communicating the science of climate change to non-scientific audiences. They will be able to work quickly and creatively to catalyze new analyses and products that meet the needs of the country.  Supported by our content and communications specialists, they will communicate climate science to the media and the public. This position is for a two-year term with the possibility of renewal.
 

Job activities include but are not limited to:

Area #1: Advancing the science

  • Using models and data to improve our ability to predict future conditions
  • Presenting results at scientific conferences
  • Publishing results in white papers, reports, and peer-reviewed journals 

Area #2: Translating science to public-facing tools

  • Contributing to the development of methods and products that attribute weather events and their impacts to climate change
  • Developing analyses that quantify climate impacts such as changes in growing seasons and collaborating with technical staff to turn these into service products

Area #3: External engagement

  • Representing Climate Central to external audiences, both scientific and non-scientific
  • Communicating climate science through media interviews and on social media

Essential qualifications:

Climate science training. You have a Ph.D. in climate science or a related field and 5-10 years of postdoctoral experience.

Expertise in climate physics and impacts: Through publications and products, you have demonstrated the ability to conduct research on the climate system and its impacts.

Experience with climate models and data: You have experience working with climate models and large geophysical datasets and familiarity with machine learning approaches.

Experience communicating climate science: You are passionate about the science of climate change.  You have a track record of communicating the science of climate change to scientific and non-scientific audiences and connecting with external parties to develop collaborations within the broader scientific community.

Preference will be given to candidates who have:

  • Experience working in a federal lab
  • A track record of public communications through media interviews or on social media

Compensation: The expected base salary range for this position is $100,000-$110,000. Within the range, individual pay is determined by work location and additional factors, including job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training. Climate Central offers generous benefits including more than 7 weeks paid vacation and holidays available annually, 12 weeks paid family leave, medical, dental, 401K with up to 12% matching, and partial college tuition for children of employees who qualify.

Location and employment eligibility: This position can be mostly remote, in accordance with Climate Central organizational policy. Presence at headquarters or other U.S.-based locations is required for periodic team and organizational meetings, events and retreats. Climate Central’s headquarters are in Princeton, N.J.. Candidates must be eligible for employment in the United States.
