About the role:

Climate Central is seeking a highly skilled, dynamic and passionate leader to join our team as the senior director of our new climate services program. Reporting to Chief Program Officer Dr. Andrew Pershing, the Director of Climate Services will lead the development of this new initiative to provide climate services that serve the public good. The Director of Climate Services will leverage their knowledge of public climate services in the U.S. and will work with external partners to identify priority needs. They will direct a growing team of scientists, communications specialists, and developers to produce information and communications products that meet those needs. 

As a member of the Programs Leadership Team, the Director of Climate Services will contribute to charting Climate Central’s strategic direction. They will work closely with the leaders of Climate Central’s core programmatic departments (Science, Engagement, Content, and Technology) to bring in the expertise needed to advance the climate services initiative and Climate Central’s mission.

The ideal Director of Climate Services will have an established track record of working with stakeholders across multiple sectors and with multidisciplinary science and product development teams. They will be actively engaged with the application of climate science in the public sphere through participation in working groups such as the U.S. National Climate Assessment. They will also be able to work quickly and creatively to catalyze new reports and products that lead to timely, compelling, and impactful communication opportunities.

Job activities include but are not limited to:

  • Directing Climate Central’s Climate Services Program including setting strategy, driving and tracking annual goals, and managing the program’s budget
  • Working with external stakeholders across multiple sectors and both public and commercial to identify opportunities to develop products that build resilience
  • Working with the product and business development teams to generate new earned revenue streams
  • Organizing internal experts to build, test, evaluate, and promote climate services
  • Representing Climate Central with leaders in government, academia, and business
  • Contributing to the operation and growth of Climate Central by collaborating with other departments and programs and serving on the Programs Leadership Team.

Domain Expertise: You have a scientific background related to climate change and have a broad understanding of how climate science serves society. You have a demonstrated track record of organizing multidisciplinary teams to build products that meet stakeholder needs.

Stakeholder Engagement: You have built high-trust relationships with external partners and have a deep knowledge of how different sectors are using climate services

Preference will be given to candidates who have:

  • 20+ years experience working for a federal agency with a significant climate services portfolio
  • Contributed to synthesis activities like the National Climate Assessment, IPCC reports, or national working groups on climate services
  • Experience working with the commercial sector

Compensation: The expected base salary range for this position is $170,000-$180,000. Within the range, individual pay is determined by work location and additional factors, including job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training.  Climate Central offers generous benefits including more than 7 weeks paid vacation and holidays available annually, 12 weeks paid family leave, medical, dental, 401K with a 6% employer contribution + up to 6% employer match, and partial college tuition for children of employees who qualify.  This position is for a two-year term with the possibility of renewal.

Location and employment eligibility: This position can be mostly remote, in accordance with Climate Central organizational policy. Presence at headquarters or other U.S.-based locations is required for periodic team and organizational meetings, events and retreats. Climate Central’s headquarters are in Princeton, N.J.. Candidates must be eligible for employment in the United States.
