About Climate Central:

Climate Central is an independent group of scientists and science translators who research and report the facts about our changing climate and how it affects people’s lives. We use science and tech to generate thousands of local storylines and compelling visuals that make climate change relevant and show what can be done about it. We address climate science, sea level rise, extreme weather, energy, and related topics. We collaborate with journalists, TV meteorologists, and other respected messengers, reaching broad audiences through local voices in the US and 150 nations. Our research and visuals appear in thousands of TV spots and well over ten thousand other news stories each year, and our impact is growing.

About the role

Climate Central is seeking an interdisciplinary research technician to be part of an initiative to deliver compelling, accurate, and timely messages about climate-related events around the world. This initiative is built on daily, high-resolution estimates of how strongly climate change is influencing conditions in the atmosphere and ocean. The technician will work with the project team to conduct robust scientific analyses and syntheses of this data–as well as other weather, climate, and geospatial data–that result in powerful messaging about the role of climate change in driving extreme weather and impacts on daily lives.

The ideal candidate will have a foundational working knowledge of climate change and its drivers and will have experience developing analyses and visualizations from climate and weather data using Python. This position is for a two-year term with the possibility of renewal.

Job activities include but are not limited to:

Area #1: Analyzing climate data

  • Working with our attribution science team to quantify how climate change alters the frequency or severity of climate-driven weather events
  • Using climate model data and other geospatial datasets to highlight climate-related hazards
  • Developing and running Python code to analyze large datasets

Area #2: Translating research into public-facing materials and messages

  • Working with our communications team to develop scientifically sound statements that characterize the links between climate change, extreme weather, and the impacts of both
  • Working with our technology team to translate analyses into operational products and interactives

Essential qualifications:

  • Training or experience in climate science, meteorology, earth sciences, or a related discipline, including using statistical approaches for analyzing time series and multivariate data
  • Experience analyzing and visualizing large climate and geospatial datasets in Python using packages such as xarray, pandas, statsmodels, and cartopy
  • Ability to work collaboratively within a fast-paced environment and to see perspectives across different disciplines and vocabularies
  • Excellent communications skills with a track record of effectively communicating about data and scientific findings

Preference will be given to candidates who have:

  • Familiarity with software development tools such as git and comfort using the Unix command line
  • Experience producing scientific manuscripts and reports
  • Familiarity with the science and/or data relevant to quantifying climate impacts in one or more sectors, such as health or economics
  • Commitment to equity in one's work and work environment.

Compensation: The expected base salary range for this position is $65,000-68,000. Within the range, individual pay is determined by work location and additional factors, including job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training. Climate Central offers generous benefits including paid vacation, 12 weeks paid family leave, medical, dental, 401K with up to 12% matching, and partial college tuition for children of employees who qualify.

Location and employment eligibility: This position can be mostly remote, in accordance with Climate Central organizational policy. Presence at headquarters or other U.S.-based locations is required for periodic team and organizational meetings, events and retreats. Climate Central’s headquarters are in Princeton, N.J. Candidates must be eligible for employment in the United States.
